Return to Oz (1985)

The first film I've decided to analysis is Return to Oz directed by Walter Murch. I personal think this is a classic and is a film I remember when I was younger, at the time I think at points in this film I was slightly scared especially the part where the Evil Mombi is headless and running after Dorothy. However back to the present I was reading an article and I didn't actually realize that this film was a complete flop for example many critics described this film as one of the most terrifying children's film. It was described as being Bleak, creepy and somewhat terrifying.

Story & Plot

Dorothy is back in Kansas, 6 months have passed since the Tornado where she first ended up in Oz. Since coming back she can't stop thinking about Oz, and even believes that her friends have sent her a key. Aunt Em, worried for Dorothy's health, takes her to a famous doctor who works miracles with electricity. When she escapes from the treatment, she and her pet chicken, Billina, find themselves in Oz. But when she tries to find her old friends in the Emerald City, she learns that they've all been transformed to stone by the Nome King. And the evil witch Mombie wants her head. It's up to her, Billina, and their new friends, the clockwork Tik-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and Gump to defeat Mombie and the Nome King and restore the rightful ruler of Oz to her throne.

Dorothy is a caring young Girl who always thinks of other first, however her Aunt Em is worried as she's not sleeping and is talking about a land called Oz where she has once been. Dorothy is determined that Oz is real and tries to convince everyone, her Aunt Em decided the best thing for her is to take her to a Doctor who can help with her over active imagination. The Doctor decides the best thing for her is to send electric pulses through her brain. However before doing so a storm cuts out the electricity in the building allowing Dorothy to escape with a strange girl. Once Dorothy wakes she finds herself in Oz however it does not look like it once did. She senses a great evil has consumed Oz. Because she cares about her friends and Oz so much she decides to confront the Evil Mombie showing courage and bravery with help of Tik Tok. Once she has defeated Mombie she then flys over to the Nome King's Mountain to ask for the Emerald's back and to restore the Emerald city. When her plan fails and all her friends have been captured she still has faith and determination to get her friends she comes up with a plan to free them and to destroy the Nome King. In the end Dorothy restores the Emerald City and saves the Scarecrow and the Queen. 

Hair and Makeup Styling

The lady who did Dorothy's Makeup in the film was Magdalen Gaffney, they kept her Make up very simple as she was very a young character. Her makeup/hair and outfit styling reflected her innocents and age.
